v1.2 has gone gold

Published on Thursday, April 28, 2011 By Brad Wardell In War of Magic

I've spent the last couple of days trying to wreck WOM v1.2.  Each time there's been an RC, I take a shot at destroying it -- and have succeeded in doing so. Hence why we're in April and still monkeying with v1.2.

I won't go through all the new features and changes in v1.2 over v1.11 but here are the things I think people will notice very quickly:

1. Framerate is substantially faster.

2. End turn performance is substantially faster.

3. Memory use has been drastically reduced.

Once v1.2 is out the door, we move onto the v1.3 track which is almost purely a feature upgrade to the game.

A kook with a long attention span

Published on Friday, April 22, 2011 By Brad Wardell In Misc

Every time I announce to family and friends what noon kooky thing I’m going to try, people assume that I’ll grow tired of it and quit doing it.

My poor wife, however, knows differently and has gone from being supportive to dread when I start brain storming some hair brained thing I’d like to try.

I think the bees were the tipping point where she realized that once I pick up a hobby, I’ll stick to it.  Obviously there’s finite time in the day so hobbies to displace other activities (movies, television and recently fiction books).

This last year I talked her into having the family adopt an Entlebucher Swiss Mountain Dog puppy. Not only did I want our kids to have a family dog but I am very interested in training dogs.

This year, the raised gardens are being built. It’s a series of 30 inch high brick “desks” in the back that I’m going to grow food in. This is the compromise hobby since my wife was adamant about not having chickens. It should be noted that Chris Taylor’s wife (Gas Powered Games) is fine with Chris having chickens and she got a beehive this year.  Just saying.  My first attempt at compromise, miniature goats, didn’t pass the grade.

Next year, the fruit trees I’m having put in the orchard this year should be mature enough to be worth tending to and bare fruit (bear?).

That is, assuming I haven’t been committed by then… Smile

Game Journalism and The Narrative

Published on Friday, April 22, 2011 By Brad Wardell In PC Gaming

I do a lot of interviews. But I’m doing fewer and fewer of them as time goes on because it seems like the odds it’ll create negative PR increases as our company becomes more successful.

If you do an hour long interview, you provide a lot of potential fodder. How it is used often depends on the “narrative” that the journalist is trying to get your interview to fit. That is, often there is a headline that the journalist is looking for and will scour your words to find something that can be fitted to that.

So next time you read an article that quotes me and it sounds like I’m criticizing something or saying something sensational the odds are, it’s a quote taken without context (not just out of context but pretty much without context).  People who know me “in the real world” know I follow an axiom of “do not criticize fellow developers”. But, at the same time, I also say a lot of things when I talk (as opposed to when I write) that are meant to be funny but can be turned into pretty much anything when written.

If you want to get an idea of what I’m talking about, listen to the Jumping the Shard Podcast. Specifically, pretend you’re a journalist trying to come up with something sensationalized to drum up page views and imagine all the sensational stories you could mine from my podcast.

The JTS podcast gives you a pretty accurate account of what I’m like in real life. Then compare it to how articles that claim to quote me. The difference is called the narrative.

Disney World fun tips?

Published on Friday, April 8, 2011 By Brad Wardell In Life, the Universe and Everything

Ok, my family is going to Disney World next week. I'm hoping it won't be too insane as most of the Spring Break stuff is...I hope...passing.

Has anyone been there recently? If so, any suggestions on maximizing fun for a 14 year old boy, a 10 year old boy and a 4 year old girl?

Thanks!

For me but not for thee

Has anyone ever noticed that people, with pride, will often say that they would choose X over Y even if it were easier to get rich (or richer) if they chose Y but when they read about someone else doing the same they’re shocked?

Demigod: What would you do?

Published on Thursday, April 7, 2011 By Brad Wardell In Demigod

This month marks the two year anniversary of Demigod's initial release. It's time to start thinking about its future.

If you had your way, what would you do with Demigod?

For example: For a Demgiod v1.5, what key tweaks would you do in that?

For a Demigod expansion, what would you do in that?

For a Demigod sequel, what would you do in that?

We'd like to hear how you guys would like to see Demigod evolve in the future.
