Widgets become Gadgets

Published on Monday, February 7, 2005 By Brad Wardell In WinCustomize News

On March 1st, Stardock will release DesktopX Pro. It's a $69.95 version of DesktopX designed for power users and software developers who are interested in turning their widgets into completely stand-alone program.

A gadget is essentially the same as a widget but with one key difference - they don't require any run-times or anything else in order to run. A gadget can be sent to anyone running Windows 2000/XP and run.

This may present an opportunity for ambitious software developers who recognize that there's a big world besides clocks and calendars and RSS feeds. That's because DesktopX 3 has direct access to a great deal of the underlying Windows APIs. In other words, the types of programs one might have created with Visual Basic in the past for release on-line can be created with DesktopX Pro with a lot less effort and with all the cool visuals included.

To facilitate developers, Stardock will be launching a new site in April called DesktopGadgets.com.  On it, developers can upload their gadgets, set their price (free or any amount they choose), and if it passes moderation the gadget then becomes available for sale with the developer and the site splitting the proceeds.

Stardock hopes that this will open up a whole new category of software development and increase the quality of available gadgets and widgets available.

DesktopX 3 is coming!

Published on Monday, February 7, 2005 By Brad Wardell In WinCustomize News

Stardock, the world's leading developer of OS enhancement utilities, announced DesktopX 3 and DesktopX 3 Pro today which will be released on March 1st.

DesktopX is the program that helped introduce the concept of desktop content that does more than icons but aren't traditional applications (what later became known as "widgets"). With DesktopX, users could design their own mini-applets or entire desktops and export them for others to use. First released in 2000, DesktopX has received millions of downloads, including over 2.5 million downloads on CNET's Download.com alone making it one of the most popular OS enhancement programs of all time.

DesktopX 3 includes a host of new features over DesktopX 2. But most importantly, it is being presented in a whole new way.  In DesktopX 3, the development environment is separate from the user portion. In previous versions of DesktopX, the content creation aspects were integrated with the end user portions. With DesktopX 3, users who just want to use widgets and desktops created by others can do so without interacting with the development environment.

"The entire presentation of DesktopX is being streamlined and simplified," said Alberto Riccio, Project Manager of DesktopX. "The people who want to add calendars or media players or stock tickers to their desktop can do that without ever having to deal with the full DesktopX configuration interface as they did before."

The part that Stardock expects to make the most waves is the release of DesktopX Pro at $69.95.  DesktopX Pro allows users to take their widgets (exported content that requires DesktopX to be installed) and turn them into gadgets (stand alone programs that can be sent to any Win2K/XP user without additional downloading).

DesktopX Pro opens the door for ambitious software developers to create new, innovative software at a fraction of the time.

Shae Petersen, founder of Dmense Solutions and known widely for his efforts at 545 Studios (developer of Aimutation, Greybook, and countless other programs) sees DesktopX Pro as a way to create small, high quality programs quickly and easily. "DesktopX Pro will let Dmense to create slick, highly functional mini-programs that we can then provide to our customers in a timely manner."

To facilitate developers and customers, Stardock is also announcing a new website called DesktopGadgets.com. This new site will enable developers to upload their gadgets, set their price, and if they pass moderation become available for sale with the revenue split evenly between the author and the site. DesktopGadgets.com is expected to launch in April.

For widget/gadget developers and users, DesktopX 3 has a significant advantage over other widget enabling programs in that ActiveX controls and WMI features are directly accessible from DesktopX enabling a much wider range of widgets to be developed (i.e. a whole world beyond clocks, weather widgets, and RSS feeds). For example, where other widget enablers might have to include explicit support for developers to create battery meters, DesktopX provides direct WMI access to the complete WMI interface for battery information. In other words, developers aren't limited to what Stardock thought of for creating content.

DesktopX 3 will be available in three forms on March 1, 2005:

  • A DesktopX run-time for $14.95 for those who just want to run objects, widgets, and desktops created by others.
  • DesktopX Standard for $24.95 which will allow users to design their own desktops, widgets, and objects for personal use or for sharing with others.
  • DesktopX Pro for $69.95 which allows for objects and widgets to be exported as gadgets (Stand-alone programs) that anyone can use.

The home page for DesktopX is http://www.desktopx.net.  DesktopX 3 standard will also be part of Stardock's Object Desktop suite of desktop enhancements (www.objectdesktop.com).

184,000 uniques yesterday!

Published on Monday, February 7, 2005 By Brad Wardell In WinCustomize News

Yesterday 184,773 different people visited the site. A new record!  In January, 3.2 million different people visited WinCustomize.com.  Each day the site receives around 750,000 visitors (including repeat visitors).

We are in the process of updating our backend to support more servers, more bandwidth, etc.  We'll probably have a subscription drive in March in order to help raise funds to pay for the new servers and such and help keep WinCustomize as independent as it can be.

We'd like to thank all of you for visiting our site and hope you're enjoying your stay!

The new research system

Published on Saturday, February 5, 2005 By Brad Wardell In Research

We're currently working on the new research screen. It is a pretty significant departure from the old "tech tree".  It's much more linear now with it categorized into specific areas (propulsion, weapons, etc.).

When you select a particular category, indviidual tech trees will show up that let you move up, for instance, the beam weapons tech tree under "weapons".

If anyone has any requests, this is the place to do it.

So many hours..

So I'm now at 4 days and 10 hours of play time (type "/played" in the prompt and you can find out how much time you've played).  Stormy Waters, the highest level player in our guild, is level 56 and has put in 18 days in.

This is literally how many hours one has spent in the game. So you can get an idea of the time investment involved to get high up. ; and how addictive the game is.

WinCustomize 2005!
WinCustomize was whipped out in about a month or two back in the beginning of 2001 when a bunch of the major customization sites (skin sites) went down suddenly.  And from there it grew and grew and grew..

We are pleased to announce WinCustomize 2005. Completely rewritten and redesigned with tons of new features!

Come Visit the all new WinCustomize.com! www.wincustomize.com

One change we've made to WinCustomize Magazine - we're not linking to images anymore. Many email programs don't load up images by default for security reasons and we don't want WC Mag to look bad by default. Besides, this makes it smaller and cleaner to read.  But feel free to let us know what you think on the forums on WinCustomize.

CursorXP 1.31
Stardock CursorXP is a freeware program that enables users to have spectacular mouse cursors. Unlike the basic Windows mouse cursors, CursorXP mouse cursors can be both alpha blended and fully animated at the same time. It's also incredibly easy to make your own mouse cursors with CursorXP as the different cursor states are just "bit strip" in PNG format (every frame of animation stored in a single .PNG file).

Stardock also makes CursorXP Plus which adds additional features to CursorXP such as color changing and changing the size of the cursor on the fly.  There are hundreds of Stardock CursorXP mouse cursors available on most customization websites (including WinCustomize, deviantART, Skinbase, and elsewhere). You can download it at www.cursorxp.com.

New in version 1.31: Various performance tweaks along with support for 64bit Windows (for those of you with the AMD64).

Orthodox Unorthodox!
Last month we released SkinPlant's Unorthodox skin pack.  It was a collection of 5 skins that took on totally unique ideas on how the Windows GUI might be done.  It's been a hit with users.  But many users loved the designs so much that they requested that we provide them with "normal" styles as well.  That is, ones with the standard Windows configuration.

So this month, Unorthodox has been updated to include Orthodox skins. If you already have Unorthodox, just go here and put in your email address and it'll send you a link to the updated pack.

ObjectDock 1.1
ObjectDock & ObjectDock Plus 1.1 are now available! ObjectDock is a freeware program launcher and task manager that is highly configurable in how they look and feel. ObjectDock Plus adds tabbed docks, multiple docks, fly-out menus and other features.

New in ObjectDock / ObjectDock Plus 1.1:

  • Zooming tabbed docks (icons in tabbed docks can now zoom).
  • You can now always resize tabbed docks from corners
  • Can now run on limited user accounts
  • Supports WinKey+D now (show desktop no longer hides ObjectDock if it's set to always on bottom or top)
  • Unicode support
  • Multiple language support (see files in \lang directory)
  • Standard docks adjust themselves properly on screen resolution change.
  • Auto-hide sensitivity options added for standard docks
  • Folder menu items with &'s in them now supported

Natural Desktop Released
Natural Desktop is a program that gives your desktop a natural look, feel, and sound to it. First, it changes the wallpaper on your desktop based on the time of day and time of year. The wallpapers were created by Ryan Bliss, founder of Digital Blasphemy. Mason Fischer created nearly a half hour sound track that is based on the time of day. Morning doves in the morning, crickets at night, rain when it's storming. And finally, the most advanced weather visuals available created by Matt Crockett (Tiggz) are displayed.  With tons of settings and the ability to customize the wallpapers and sounds to your liking, Natural Desktop has become one of the most popular programs Stardock makes.

Version 1.2 fixes some bugs users have reported such as saving default sounds, toggling the 12/24 clock, rain and thunderstorm sound effects being in sync with your current weather, quick mute not working, and some animation looping at midnight addressed.

If you already have Natural Desktop, use Stardock Central (www.sdcentral.net) to update to the latest version. If you don't have Natural Desktop, check it out!

A guided tour of WindowBlinds 4.5

Published on Friday, February 4, 2005 By Brad Wardell In WinCustomize News

What's WindowBlinds? What does it do? If you are visiting this site, odds are you would probably like WindowBlinds. It's a program that can change the look and feel of the entire Windows GUI.

Check out the article below that guides you through why you might want to use it and what's new in the just released version 4.5!

David Weise: The man who made Windows!

Published on Friday, February 4, 2005 By Brad Wardell In WinCustomize News

Once upon a time, Microsoft and IBM were working on OS/2 2.0 together. OS/2 was going to replace DOS and Windows.

But then..in the middle of this, a gifted engineer at Microsoft figured out how to get Microsoft Windows to run multiple DOS sessions at once (that could be multitasked together) and figured out how to get Windows programs to run in protected mode (i.e. breaking the 640K barrier).  By figuring that out, Windows 3.0 was made and so was history.

Eventually OS/2 was wiped out by Windows and today, most of us are running Windows XP.  But without the contributions of David Weise, the computing world would likely be very different (and for the worse) today (though I wish OS/2 had won out, I don't think OS/2 2.0 would have been nearly as good if it weren't for Windows 3.0).

Skinning your Windows GUI with WindowBlinds 4.5

Published on Friday, February 4, 2005 By Brad Wardell In WindowBlinds

WindowBlinds 4.5 is out and holy cow is it cool! First off, I should probably explain to those of you not familiar with WindowBlinds what it is:

WindowBlinds is a program that enables you to completely change the look and feel of Microsoft Windows's user interface (i.e. title bars, push buttons, Start bar, scrollbars, etc.).

Let's take a quick, step by step, journey through what that exactly means.  Below is a screenshot of the popular voice over IP program Ventrilo.

So here you have what Ventrilo looks like under Windows 2000 or if you're running classic mode in Windows XP (you control this through the display properties in Control Panel under the "Appearance" tab.

With Windows XP, you can apply a new look and feel called Windows XP Style to it:

So now you have new title bars for it. But because it's not "theme aware" (i.e. the program wasn't designed to be "skinned" most of it still looks classic.  This is what you get with the bundled "uxtheme" engine.  Uxtheme is the "skinning engine" that comes with Windows XP.  One might describe it as a sort of "WindowBlinds lite".  It can't skin theme aware programs and by default it can only really change programs that have been made to recognize it.  There are hacks that let you add more styles to it that literally patch out Microsoft's digital signing protection but that's not recommended by Microsoft.

On the other hand, there's WindowBlinds. It's Microsoft certified and has tons of features that let you really change the way Windows looks.

If you apply the Windows XP style with WindowBlinds, you get this:

Look at the push buttons and checkboxes. They're fully changed to the Windows XP look.  So if you want the Windows XP look across everything, get WindowBlinds.

Early versions of WindowBlinds were designed for Windows 95/98 which meant they had to do some..yucky things to work.  So running those early versions of WindowBlinds could slow down your computer. But then WindowBlinds 4 came out and it was designed with Windows XP in mind. And with that came all sorts of hardware acceleration and optimization that made WindowBlinds much faster.

WindowBlinds 4.4 came out in late 2004 and it introduced some new optimizations that actually made WindowBlinds noticeably faster than a system not running WindowBlinds.  So in effect, putting aside its customization features, WindowBlinds 4.4 was a Windows acceleration program.

The PC company Alienware includes WindowBlinds on all their computers to provide them with an Alienware look and feel. It also probably helps that it improves the performance of the Windows GUI while doing so.

Now there's WindowBlinds 4.5.

WindowBlinds 4.5 adds two basic new features that are both killer: Changing the color of a skin through hue/saturation shifting and per-pixel alpha blended Start menus.

Changing the colors of visual styles on the fly...

Hue/Saturation colorization. WindowBlinds had colorizing before but not like this. Before, you could apply a color to an entire skin. This worked on some skins quite well but on many skins not so well. Why? Because if you take a blue and yellow skin (For instance) and apply red to the whole thing, the entire thing looks..well yucky.

Hue shifting is different. You shift the colors of the skins rather than apply a color mask to them. This has the effect making skins look a lot more normal and interesting.

So a skin like VectorCell might look like this normally and we'll load up the Setup dialog of that Ventrilo program so you can see the dialog of a pretty busy looking window:

But with Hue and saturation shifting it could then be made to look like this:

Notice how natural it looks? It doesn't looked washed out. Even if you would never want a purple skin on your desktop, it now looks like it designed with purple in mind.

Or how about if you wanted to have it be a more vibrant blue?

You can have that too.  Or any other color you can think of. All looking as if the skin was always meant to have that.

But let's go with something harder. Something more challenging. How about some skin that has lots of colors?

Here's Faux-Toon. It has many colors. You could not colorize this with the old system because it would look very muddied with a single color grafted onto everything.

Not that we'd recommend this color combination but rather just as a demonstration of the difference between hue-shifting (a WindowBlinds 4.5 feature) and what you can imagine applying some arbitrary color to the entire thing.

Alpha Blended Start menus...

WindowBlinds 4.5 lets you now have Start menus that have per-pixel alpha blending. It's up to skinners (the artists/designers who make these cool visual styles) to create visual styles that use it.  But early indications are that this feature is going to be pretty exciting.

With per-pixel alpha blending, you can have Start menus that have semi transparent portions to them. Parts that you can partially see through.

Version 4.5 comes with one and there are others in development.

Another cool Start menu.

So many visual styles

On websites I've seen people say "all the WindowBlinds skins I see are ugly".  Well, most skins for anything aren't going to be of your taste.  Luckily, WindowBlinds 4.5 is the first version of WindowBlinds to be released since the new version of WinCustomize. It is much easier to sort through skins than the old WinCustomize.

For instance, if you want to see visual styles that are the favorites of the admins click HERE.

Plus you have the fact that there's thousands of WindowBlinds skins out there:

So there you have it, WindowBlinds 4.5. It's available for download now!  If you have Object Desktop you'll get this automatically.  You can purchase WindowBlinds or Object Desktop here which includes WindowBlinds.
