BootSkin 1.01 released

Published on Sunday, February 22, 2004 By Brad Wardell In WinCustomize News

BootSkin is a program that enables users to safely change the Windows XP and Windows 2000 boot screen. Since its recent release, hundreds of free boot screens have already been created (they're typically only 20K or less in size).

BootSkin 1.01 fixes an incompatibility with VIA motherboards that kept BootSkin from working on those systems (at this point, BootSkin should work on 100% of systems out there).

BootSkin is freeware.  Stardock is also working on a BootSkin Plus which will allow users to apply true color boot screens (1024x768x16.8 million colors) but has no release date on that version.

You can download BootSkin 1.01 at www.bootskin.com

Some thoughts on the debt

Published on Saturday, February 21, 2004 By Brad Wardell In Current Events

We have a huge debt.  The debt is caused because the federal government spends more than it gets in. You either have to increase income or reduce expenses. The deficit is large enough and the debt so vast that raising taxes would not likely do the trick and besides, it rewards poor financial management.

What pro-mommy government people don't realize, typically because they've never dealt with the government itself, is that the government is incredibly inefficient and incompetent.  It's not like your tax dollar goes to some poor person directly. Instead, it goes through a huge beaueucracy which eats up most of it and then a small amount makes it back.  Nothing is more efficient than individuals spending their own money and living within their means.

The debt is not caused by welfare to poor people. It's not caused by defense. It's caused by an over expenditure in both social programs and non-social programs.

The reason this issue won't get solved is that people who care enough to even talk about this issue have no apparent idea of what the government spends its money on in the first place.  You have some people talking about education as if it's mainly funded by the federal government when in fact arguably the federal government shouldn't be spending anything on public schools (it's a state issue). You have others insisting that the problem is too much defense spending despite the fact that the deficit exceeds the entire defense budget.  The biggest problem is that the federal government is spending money on things that really have nothing to do with the job of the federal government.

Just because one believes in welfare doesn't mean that the federal government is the one to provide it.  The federal government is the least equipped to provide these programs because of its inherent inefficiecy. It would be much better for states or local communities to handle it if you don't trust charities (for some reason, liberals don't like charities and instead want the government to do instead despite the obvious ineptitude of governments).

People who love the government to do things are almost always people who have never had to deal with one of their agencies.  Ever deal with the phone company? Or some other big private industyr monopoly? They're usually incredibly incompotent. But that's nothing compared to the government.

If we want to eliminate the deficit and reduce the debt, we have to take a cold hard look at where the federal government spends its money. Then we have to make some tough decisions.

WindowBlinds Skinning - how to do it

Published on Friday, February 20, 2004 By Brad Wardell In WindowBlinds Competition
If you have Object Desktop, you can make use of SkinStudio 4.1 which will also be available soon as a shareware version to use.

The SkinStudio developer's guide is now available on-line: Link

It's in PDF format but it should help get you started.

Here's how I personally create skins for what it's worth:

(1) I create a mockup of my skin in Photoshop. This includes up and down states for the buttons and such.

(2) I load up SkinStudio and choose NEW skin in USF (Universal Skin Format). This will bring me to the editor with the standard Windows XP skin.

(3) I then load my mockup as a Template image. From there, I can highlight the pieces I want and assign them to replace the parts of the GUI I want. Sometimes it's easier to just use Photoshop to save individual controls as .PNG files (like title bar buttons) so that you don't have to highlight them in SkinStudio from your mockup.

Some other tips:

* Make sure you use the metrics section to set your title bar height.

* Try to define your own colors and fonts when possible so that you aren't relying on the user's default fonts. Otherwise you may end up where people are seeing buttons with the text wrapping and such.

* If your experience is using msstyles, be aware that WindowBlinds supports skinning more aspects of the Windows GUI. Little things like the Start menu mouse-overs to big things like logon/logoff dialogs are things people are used to seeing skinned.

The SERVERS have ARRIVED!

Published on Friday, February 20, 2004 By Brad Wardell In WinCustomize News

In November, WinCustomize lost 2 of its main servers to hardware failure. And amazingly, in January we lost another one! In all the years Stardock had been running websites we'd never had any server crashes and yet we lost 3 in a period of just a few months.

So in December we ran a WinCustomize subscription drive to raise funds to replace the servers.  The servers have been arriving and hopefully you've been noticing a steady increase in the site's performance.

Here's a picture of some of the servers! Thanks again for all your help! If you aren't a WinCustomize subscriber, you can subscribe clicking on the store link above.

Copyright Violations

Published on Friday, February 20, 2004 By Brad Wardell In Misc
We've been noticing an increasing tendancy of people to simply go and take a well known columnist's writings and simpy copy and paste the entire thing and submit it as their blog entry here on JoeUser.com.

That violates the original author's copyright. You can use pieces of someone's article as part of your own article, that is known as "fair use". But you can't just wholesale copy someone else's work and submit it as your blog entry. Not only it is unethical but it creates a potential liability problem for the site.

If someone has written an article you strongly relate to, LINK to it. That is the nature of the web. Don't just repost what they've written. In the future, we will begin to remove articles that violate copyright (or edit them to link to the original source). Make your blog site your blog site, not a mirror of someone else's. Or alternatively, email the author and ask for permission to redistribute their article.

Neowin Widget

Published on Thursday, February 19, 2004 By Brad Wardell In Objects & Widgets

DesktopX 2.1 supports loading of widgets. A widget is a regular old program that simply requires DesktopX to be installed on your system (uses DesktopX as its run-time). It appears like a regular program in every way. DesktopX doesn't even have to be running.  DesktopX is a free download.

This Neowin widget grabs the latest headlines from Neowin.net.

DesktopX 2.1 on Download.com

Published on Thursday, February 19, 2004 By Brad Wardell In WinCustomize News

DesktopX 2.1 is now available via Download.com. If you haven't tried DesktopX or are running 2.0 or earlier, go there to get the latest version.

DesktopX 2.1 supports running widgets, which I imagine we'll start seeing soon here at WinCustomize.

If you want to see the power of a widget, here's one I whipped up in a few minutes:

https://www.stardock.com/files/minimeter.zip

This 40K zip file contains an EXE called Minimeter.exe. You don't have to have DesktopX running, as long as you have DesktopX 2.1 installed on your computer you can run widgets. Try it for yourself!

Email that cheers up

Randy, a long time Stardock customer dating back from the OS/2 days wrote me today an email that raised my flu-subdued spirits. He included a photo of all his Stardock stuff from over the past decade.

Like me, he was a big advocate of OS/2 during the good old days. Randy was one of our first (I mean very first) customers. Lot of OS/2 software there and the Windows version there too.  Thanks Randy! You made my day!

Sugar is like crack!

Published on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 By Brad Wardell In Diet
My wife and I are on a diet. I'm trying to lose about 10 pounds this year. The diet we're following calls for it to start with 3 days of cleansing the system of starches and sugars. It's not so much fasting as it is trying to get us over our addiction to starches and sugars.

And holy cow am I an addict. I never realized how much in starches and sugars I consume each day. I would start out the day with French toast. Then grab a glazed donut or two on the way to work. For lunch, Penara Bread. And then for dinner something fairly typical like chicken or beef or whatever. I also drink 1 to 2 cans of coca cola each day. Before bed I'd have some toast or a piece of sour dough bread.

Now, for the cleansing period, I can drink water, eat as much chicken or other lean meat as I'd like. Just no sugars or starches. That means no bread, no donuts, no chocolate, no coke.

I wasn't hungry per se, because I coudl eat as much meat as I wanted to. But my craving for donuts and bread were painful. I never realized that starches and sugars could be an addiction.
